필리핀 중남부 지역을 강타한 '슈퍼 태풍' 하이옌(Haiyan)으로 사망자 수가 1만2천500여명에 이를 것으로 보인다고 현지 언론들이 10일 보도했다.

특히 최대 피해지역인 중부 레이테 섬 외에 인근 사마르 섬에서도 사망•실종자 수가 2천500여명으로 늘어나는 등 시간이 흐를수록 인명피해가 눈덩이처럼 불어나고 있다.

도미닉 페틸라 레이테 주지사는 9일 밤(현지시간) 주도 타클로반에서 열린 긴급 대책회의에서 자체 전망치를 근거로 1만명 가량이 숨진 것으로 추정된다고 말한 것으로 현지관리들이 전했다.

이들 사망자는 대부분 익사하거나 건물이 무너지면서 숨진 것으로 알려졌다.

특히 텍선 림 타클로반 행정관은 타클로반 지역에서만 1만명에 육박하는 사망자가 발생했을 가능성이 있다고 밝혔다.

인근의 사마르 섬에서도 300여명이 사망하고 약 2천명이 실종된 것으로 파악됐다.

사마르 방재당국은 dzMM방송에 관내 바세이 등 일부지역에서 약 2천명의 행방이 확인되지 않고 있다고 공개했다.

이들 지역은 하이옌 상륙 이후 지난 이틀간 외부와의 접촉이 끊긴 것으로 알려졌다.

그러나 시간이 흐를수록 사망자 수와 재산피해는 크게 늘어날 것으로 방재당국과 관측통들은 보고 있다.

실제 전날 피해현장을 둘러본 세바스천 로즈 스탐파 유엔 재해조사단장 역시 약 22만명의 인명을 앗아간 2004년 인도양 쓰나미 직후와 비슷한 규모의 피해가 났다며 대규모 피해 가능성을 우려했다.

관측통들은 구조대가 일부 고립지역으로 접근하면서 피해 윤곽이 점차 드러날 것이라고 전망했다.

특히 타클로반에는 시내 도로 주변에 시신들이 나뒹굴고 건물 지붕이 날아가거나 건물 자체가 무너지는 등 곳곳에서 참상이 목격됐다.

긴급 대피한 주민들로 만원이 된 공공대피소 1곳이 초대형 돌풍에 무너지는 참사도 발생했다.

이밖에 공항 등 주요 인프라도 모두 폐허로 변해 유령도시를 방불케 했다.

또 돌풍에 뿌리째 뽑힌 나무들이 도처에 널려 있어 구조대의 현장 접근이 제대로 이뤄지지 않고 있다.

아울러 7개 지역에서 대규모 정전사태가 발생, 주민들이 적잖은 불편을 겪은 것으로 파악됐다.

이번 태풍으로 알바이 등 36개주에서 무려 428만명이 피해를 봤으며 34만2천명이 공공대피소 신세를 지고 있는 것으로 잠정 집계됐다.

한편 이번 태풍과 관련해 한국인 인명피해는 없는 것으로 파악됐다.

주필리핀 한국대사관은 "피해지역인 타클로반과 사마르 지역에는 한국인이 살고 있지 않으며 여행객도 없는 것으로 확인됐다"고 밝혔다.

필리핀군 당국은 9일 오전 C-130 수송기를 동원, 태풍 피해지역에 구호물자를 실어나르는 등 본격적인 구호활동에 들어갔다.

태풍으로 접근이 어려운 일부 지역에는 헬리콥터를 동원, 구조대를 급파했다.

군 대변인은 1만5천여명의 병력을 피해 현장에 투입해 복구작업과 구호활동을 벌이고 있다고 밝혔다.

한편 태풍 하이옌은 10일 당초의 예상 진로를 바꿔 베트남 북부지역을 향해 움직이는 것으로 관측됐다.

베트남소리방송(VOV)은 기상당국을 인용, 하이옌이 북중부와 북부해안 지역으로 접근하고 있다면서 수도 하노이 등 북부지역에 최고 300㎜의 폭우가 예상된다고 전했다. 앞서 베트남 당국은 하이옌이 다낭과 꽝응아이성 등 베트남 중부 4개 지역에 상륙할 것으로 예보한 바 있다.

베트남 중부와 북부지역에서는 약 60만명이 안전지대로 긴급 대피한 것으로 알려졌다.

베트남군 당국은 이번 태풍과 관련해 정규군 등 45만명의 병력을 동원, 해안 등 취약지역에 배치해 만일의 사태에 대비하고 있다. (연합뉴스)

More than 10,000 feared dead in typhoon-ravaged Philippines

TACLOBAN, Philippines -- The death toll from a super typhoon that decimated entire towns in the Philippines could soar well over 10,000, authorities warned Sunday, making it the country's worst recorded natural disaster.

The horrifying estimates came as rescue workers appeared overwhelmed in their efforts to help countless survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan, which sent tsunami-like waves and merciless winds rampaging across a huge chunk of the archipelago on Friday.

Police said they had deployed special forces to contain looters in Tacloban, the devastated provincial capital of Leyte, while the United States announced it had responded to a Philippine government appeal and would send military help.

"Tacloban is totally destroyed. Some people are losing their minds from hunger or from losing their families," high school teacher Andrew Pomeda, 36, told AFP, as he warned of the increasing desperation of survivors.

"People are becoming violent. They are looting business establishments, the malls, just to find food, rice and milk... I am afraid that in one week, people will be killing from hunger."

Authorities were struggling to even understand the sheer magnitude of the disaster, let alone react to it, with the regional police chief for Leyte saying 10,000 people were believed to have died in that province alone.

"We had a meeting last night with the governor and, based on the government's estimates, initially there are 10,000 casualties (dead)," Chief Superintendent Elmer Soria told reporters in Tacloban.

"About 70 to 80 percent of the houses and structures along the typhoon's path were destroyed."

On the neighbouring island of Samar, a local disaster chief said 300 people were killed in the small town of Baser.

He added another 2,000 were missing there and elsewhere on Samar, which was one of the first areas to be hit when Haiyan swept in from the Pacific Ocean with maximum sustained winds of 315 kilometres an hour.

Dozens more people were confirmed killed in other flattened towns and cities across a 600-kilometre (370-mile) stretch of islands through the central Philippines.

The Philippines endures a seemingly never-ending pattern of deadly typhoons, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and other natural disasters.

This is because it is located along a typhoon belt and the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many of Earth's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

However, if the feared death toll of above 10,000 is correct, Haiyan would be the deadliest natural disaster ever recorded in the Philippines.

Until Haiyan, the deadliest disaster in the Philippines was in 1976, when a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake devastated the Moro Gulf on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, killing between 5,000 and 8,000 people.

Haiyan could also be the deadliest natural disaster in the Asia-Pacific since a huge tsunami in 2004 killed an estimated 220,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and other coastal parts of the region.

Haiyan set other apocalyptic-style records with its winds making it the strongest typhoon in the world this year, and one of the most powerful ever recorded.
